Rootstock planting on November 14, 2000

A virgin soil, free of diseases, in an isolated area 400 yards away from any citrus orchards is well tilled and all nutrients required for ideal development of citrus trees and their root systems are added. Spacing adopted is 3 feet between rows and 1 foot between plants. Planting holes are dug using with dibbles as seen on the left.

Rootstock seeds are produced by Citrolima and officially certified. Before sowing, seeds are heat treated and the seed coats are removed for disease prevention and better, faster germination. Rootstock plants or liners are routinely analyzed in our own laboratory for important diseases, specially Phytophthora rots. The liners produced in individual containers are selected from the greenhouses and taken to the field for planting ca. 90 days after sowing.

Rootstock liners, Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia Osbeck) in this case, are planted with the use of hand dibbles by firmly pressing the roots in the holes. The area is irrigated soon afterwards.
